Basildon was designated as a new town in 1949. This decision completely transformed the area and had a dramatic impact on the lives of the 25,000 already living there, and also the many thousands of 'incomers' who would arrive over the next few years. From both perspectives the outcome was life-changing.

This book tells the story of how Basildon New Town was built and the challenges faced, not only by the Development Corporation, but also by it's exisiting and new inhabitants. It covers the key events leading up to 1949, housing construction, the town centre, industry, art, architecture and people.
